What does self-care mean to you?

What images come to mind when you think of the words “personal care”? It usually means something very different to different people. Some of the responses I got when I asked people what this means to them include

Take time for me

Eat healthy



Have a massage.


These are all great answers when it comes to taking care of yourself.

Self-care simply means taking care of yourself, not because you have to, but because you want to. Because it feels good to do so, and because you like to take care of your own needs, as well as those of others. This is such an Self-Careimportant thing to do for yourself. We can only give to others when we have a lot to give. If you allow yourself to be exhausted, tired, dehydrated, lacking in nutrients, mentally drained and a tired body, you simply cannot enjoy life. You can’t be there for the important people in your life.

By taking care of yourself properly, you reduce the stress in your own life. You increase happiness, create a healthier body and mind, and feel more satisfied with life in general. Taking care of yourself also helps prevent burnout, but more importantly, taking care of yourself shows you that you really are an important person. That your needs matter as much as someone else’s needs, and that it’s not selfish or indulgent to take time for yourself. It’s just showing you some self-respect.


The difference between a quick fix and a substantive fix.

There’s a difference between eating fast food just because you’re hungry, and your need for a quick fix, because you don’t have time to cook yourself a delicious and nutritious meal. Fast food takes care of the hunger part of your body, but the nutritious meal takes care of everything; your hunger, but also your body and mind. You can take a quick shower to clean yourself up or you can prepare a hot bath with Epsom salts and essential oils and relax. Again, self-care is those who achieve both goals, to cleanse themselves and to relax.

Often, some women will tell you that the reason they don’t do much about self-care is because it’s too expensive or they don’t have the time. It’s true that some self-care activities can be expensive, but there are many other things you can do as well. Facials, massages, manicures, yoga classes, etc. It’s all about taking care of yourself.

There are wonderful ways to take care of yourself, but of course they come at a price. For this type of care, you might want to set aside some money each week and indulge yourself on a quarterly basis, for example. However, giving yourself these same types of luxuries at home can be relatively inexpensive, and you’ll still feel good about having them.


Some treatments are impractical on a daily basis.

Not all of us have time to soak in the bath for an hour every day, but there are many self-care actions you can introduce that can quickly become habits in your life. And other actions you may want to schedule in time on a weekly or fortnightly basis.


Some inexpensive, quick and easy self-care ideas may include:

Swap your morning coffee for a slice of lemon in hot water

give you a hand massage and a manicure

Take a nap

Drawing, painting, creation, etc.

Listen to music


Take a walk on the beach (or in your favorite place)

Invest in a foam roller and massage your sore muscles

To exercise

Prepare a healthy and nutritious meal


Start opening a compliment jar.

When someone says something nice to you or about you, write it down and put it in your compliment jar. From time Always take care of yourselfto time, read all the nice things people think about you

  • Stretch your body; or better yet, find a yoga workout on and treat your body to it.
  • Get some sun
  • To go swimming
  • Slow down. Walk slower than usual, put your phone away and try to spot 5 beautiful things in your surroundings
  • Keep a journal of gratitude and accomplishments. Every day, write down 5 things you are grateful for, and all that you are proud to accomplish that day.


Other aspects of personal care include things like seeing the doctor regularly, the dentist, elective appointments for example. Is there a minor health issue that bothers you, but you never seem to afford to make an appointment with the doctor?


Self-care is often the first thing we neglect.

When we are busy, tired or stressed that is the thing, we tend not to take care of ourselves. It is especially at these times that you have to think about it. Many people think of self-care as some sort of reward or treat, but if you start incorporating self-care into your daily and weekly routines, you’ll start to notice big improvements in your life.

If you feel that you are stressed or have forgotten that feeling of well-being, take the time today to choose a few activities that you can do every day, and that only take care of you, then choose another activity maybe longer to do on a weekly basis.
